I See God in a Simple Person
"I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have revealed them to little children" (Lk 10:21).
Yesterday afternoon Friday, October 5, 2018 while returning from the shopping, I took public transport to our monastery. I traveled with four students and a family - husband, wife and their daughter about four years old. I recognized a simple family because of the clothes, appearance and bags they carried. I shared a friendly greeting with them which is something normal for the eastern cultures. They also answered me politely and kindly.
I noticed the husband who temporarily brought three shabby 2,000 rupiahs and some 500 rupiah coins. In Indonesia the value of money is law, just enough to take public transportation for the short distance or to buy a cup of coffee in the tavern. Several times my eyes were fixed on the father who was counting coins in his hands in order to pay for the transport.
During chatting the wife said that they usually walk after work, but today their children asked for a ride. After a while the family showed the driver that they would go down. They said goodbye to me and spontaneously told me: "Sister, we also paid fee for you" and their faces smiled sincerely at me. They went down then crossed the road and the car drove me further.
I was stunned and couldn't stop thinking of it, I had never met or known them. Although their money was not excessive, they were very generous to me. I think it happened because they saw Jesus in me. That afternoon my heart was filled with joy and I thanked God for all His goodness. Through them I saw Jesus who was happy today while I was coming back from the city.
